In 2007, to ensure the AFA’s (Association des Fortin d’Amérique) continued success, its Board of directors decided to launch a pilot project whereby a few motivated members would be named regional representatives responsible for their respective regions. Thus, the Abitibi, Appalachian, Laval and Lower Saint-Laurent regions were selected to weigh the benefits of members having access to dedicated local representatives familiar with their own “home turfs”.
2008 was considered the experimental year. Each regional representative tried out ways and means to approach members – established as well as potential – according to familiar practices and personal preferences. A year later, most of those same representatives’ efforts were concentrated on the annual Gathering, held in Laval that year, as well as on evaluating the previous year’s experiences; what worked well versus what “went up like a lead balloon”.
The project is now a full-fledged program. In fact, the AFA has decided to assure access to regional representatives to its membership residing in all 17 Quebec Administrative Regions as a first objective. Currently, 10 of these regions are already covered, including Laval and Greater Montreal. The Board of directorsis confident that, once the program acquires more visibility via the AFA’s Web site and word of mouth, other volunteers will accept to cover the remaining regions or to assist established regional representatives. And why not in other Provinces or States as an ultimate objective?!
Indeed, having regional representatives where many Fortins “cousins” immigrated over time would be a big plus factor to expand the AFA’s membership. So, if you happen to live in one of those areas and are attracted by this opportunity, we encourage you to contact the Regional Representatives Program coordinator and exchange views on how you would proceed in your area or your own family circle.
